RealTOUR 2001 Explores Revitalized Areas in DC

Old Places with New Faces

GWCAR’s RealTOUR 2001 covered three areas that are experiencing major revitalization and development: Southeast DC, Capitol Hill, and NoMa. The event, held on June 1st, was kicked off at the Washington Navy Yard and attracted approximately 350 participants.

Guest speaker Admiral Christopher Weaver, Commandant in the United States Navy, described how the recent decision to relocate NAVSEA from Crystal City to Capitol Hill will have a substantial positive impact on the area. According to Admiral Weaver, the Navy is working in partnership with federal agencies, the local government, the community and the private sector to make improvements to the area. “The Navy has been part of this community for 200 years. It makes sense for us to improve the environment outside our gates,” stated the Admiral. With the relocation of Navy personnel, the base will have a working population of 10,500 people by mid-July 2001.

Craig King, GSA Project Management Executive for the Southeast Federal Center, described the tremendous opportunity for development in the area. “I don’t know of any major city along the East Coast with as much land and opportunity for development as we have in this area,” he stated.
