Continuing Education Renewal Requirements

Here is an overview of the continuing education requirements for REALTORS® in Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia:

District of Columbia

An applicant for renewal of any REAL ESTATE BROKER OR PROPERTY MANAGER license expiring on February 28, 2003 or REAL ESTATE SALESPERSONS license expiring on August 31, 2003, must submit proof of completing 15 hours of approved continuing education credit in the following subjects:

Contracts, Settlement  
Procedures & Disclosures 3 hours
DC Fair Housing 3 hours
DC Legislative Update, Ethics & Agency 3 hours
*General Electives 6 hours *(Reduced from 9 hours effective September 1, 2001)

NOTE: Please be advised that the DC Real Estate Board requires that all continuing education requirements be completed 60 days prior to the expiration of the license. Real Estate Brokers or Property Managers by December 31, 2002 and Real Estate Salespersons by June 30, 2003.

Maryland

Maryland Commercial* licensees (brokers and agents) who have been licensed for less than 10 years must complete 15 hours of continuing education credit per 2-year licensing cycle. Of the 15 hours, 3 hours must be Maryland Legislative.

Maryland Commercial* licensees (brokers and agents) who have been licensed for 10 years or more must complete 6 hours of continuing education credit per two 2-year licensing cycle. All 6 hours must be Maryland Legislative.

* Commercial licensees must certify that they have not done a residential transaction in the past 2 years nor will they be involved with a residential transaction in the next 2 years.

Maryland Residential licensees (brokers and agents) who have been licensed for less than 10 years must complete 15 hours of continuing education credit per 2-year licensing cycle. Of the 15 hours, 3 hours must be Maryland Legislative and 1.5 hours of fair housing.

Maryland Residential licensees (brokers and agents) who have been licensed for 10 years or more must complete 6 hours of continuing education credit per 2-year licensing cycle. 4.5 hours must be Maryland Legislative and 1.5 hours fair housing.

Virginia

All Virginia licensees must complete a total of 8 hours per 2-year licensing cycle as follows:

Four of the 8 hours must be in the areas of:

Federal and State Legislative Issues
Fair Housing
Standards of Practice/Ethics
The remaining 4 hours are elective.
