RealTOUR on the River

A Look at Development along the Anacostia and Potomac Rivers

This year's RealTOUR attracted more than 500 attendees, making it the most successful RealTOUR yet. For the first time ever, attendees cruised the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers to provide a tour of Washington's waterfront. From the deck of the Odyssey, RealTOUR attendees got a view of new and planned development along the rivers, as well as future development at St. Elizabeth's in Anacostia.

Lloyd Smith, Acting President of NCRC, explained plans for major development on the Southeast Waterfront. Andrew Altman, Director of the DC Office of Planning, narrated much of the tour, describing the District's plans for development along the water, including the Southeast Federal Center.

The Odyssey cruised by the future site of the Southeast Federal Center, which will be home to the headquarters of the U.S. Department of Transportation. Craig King, Project Management Executive with the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) explained how the GSA recently issued a Request for Qualifications for the development of the remaining 44 acres of waterfront. This area is planned to include a large retail component of 300,000 to 400,000 square feet, more than one million square feet of housing, additional office space, and a variety of public and cultural facilities.

Uwe Brandes, Project Manager for the Anacostia Waterfront Initiative, described the planned development along the Anacostia River. Fifteen federal agencies and the District of Columbia signed a Memorandum of Understanding two years ago to create a partnership to coordinate land use and landscape plans for the waterfront.

The tour also included the waterfront area of Arlington, Virginia, narrated by Robert Brosnan, Planning Director for the Arlington County Department of Community Planning, Housing and Development. RealTOUR featured the area for a planned development known as Waterview. Waterview will offer a 620,000 square foot, 24-story office tower and a 28-story tower housing a boutique hotel and 160 apartments.
