Virginia Anti-Growth Movement Encounters Set-Back

In February, the House Counties, Cities and Towns, and the Senate “Local Government” committees, considered legislation designed to raise recordation taxes, create impact fees, increase local government power, and strangle growth. Led by Delegates Riley Ingram (R-Hopewell), Jackie Stump (D-Oakwood), Barnie Day (D-Meadows of Dan), and Bob Hull (D-Fairfax) and Senators Fred Quayle (R-Portsmouth), John Watkins (R-Midlothian), and Steve Martin (R-Chesterfield), both committees unceremoniously dumped the anti-growth measures.

Members in both chambers discussed the need for more study of growth issues in order to formulate long-term remedies rather than quick fixes. House CCT co-Chairmen Riley Ingram and Frank Hall are proposing statewide public hearings to gather information and community input. The Virginia Association of REALTORS® will be working with legislators and interested parties to seek a balance between economic and residential development.
