Weigh in on BRAC

A standing-room only crowd of more than 300 people filled the atrium of George Mason University yesterday (June 20) to discuss looming shifts in military and contractor jobs in the metro area proposed in the Department of Defense's Base Realignment & Closure (BRAC) plan.

Attendees heard from a panel that included U.S. Senator John Warner (R-Va.), U.S. Representatives Tom Davis (R-Va.) and Jim Moran (D-Va.), Jay Fisette, Chairman of the Arlington County Board, and Joe R. Reeder, Chairman of the Virginia Commission on Military Bases. The politicians held the meeting to address concerns about the Defense Department's recommended relocations of military installations and the potential impact on 23,000 government jobs in Northern Virginia.

Elected officials highlighted the stakes for the real estate community, as well as the effect on regional traffic and the costs of moving offices.

Fisette and Moran noted that for the first time leased space was included in part of the BRAC reallocation plan, so no model exists. This could devastate some submarkets in Northern Virginia.

THEREFORE, all of the above legislators want to hear from you on how the proposed BRAC plan would negatively affect you. A commission appointed by the President will evaluate the BRAC recommendations and provide President Bush with final recommendations this fall. Congressmen will lobby for changes to the proposal before the BRAC Commission submits its report to the President.

We encourage you to send messages to the following lawmakers to provide them ammunition when discussing the matter:
